James Dean is an icon. He died before I was born and I'm no kid. You'll hear a lot about him in 2005 - the 50th anniversary of his death. So why is he an icon? Well, people have written whole books about that, so you won't find out here. The simple facts are that after a couple of stage roles and some small movie parts, he then only had three starring roles in films. It is Rebel Without a Cause in particular that speaks to a disenchanted youth and a society that was itself growing up. Turned into Stark image, it is the live fast, die young Dean icon that many know, rather than the person or even the actor. Put the image below on a T-Shirt and it speaks of an angst that many of us go through at some time. Whether that is positive or negative is not really the point. Most of us get through it to the other side. James Dean, however is an image frozen in time.
